My father was born in 1911 into a prosperous family of Swansea eye surgeons.

Above: My great-grandfather, Jabez Thomas, surgeon at the Swansea Eye Hospital

Jabez was born in 1834 in Camarthanshire. I found the family living in Swansea on the 1891 Census (above) but could not find my grandfather living in the house in Christina Street at the time. Aged 18, he may well have been away doing his medical training.

However, his sister Kate is here and they both appear ten years later (see below) living together in Brunswick Place in Swansea where my grandfather Francis (or Dinks as he was always known) has qualified as an Ophthalmic Surgeon.

Dinks (Francis Thomas) was appointed to replace his father Jabez as Ophthalmic Surgeon at Swansea Eye Hospital in October 1900 at the age of twenty-seven. He lived with his sister until his marriage to Florence in 1908.

In 1904 Florence Price was appointed as a resident doctor at the Swansea General and Eye Hospital. She had graduated in medicine at Edinburgh. In 1907 she was appointed Assistant Bacteriologist, but she resigned two months later when she became engaged to Dinks.
